Early erotic works marketed to
masses really didn’t surface until the post WW2 era.
During the war erotic photography and glamour pinups
were the mainstay of most men serving bravely at home
and especially overseas. The bulk of this material was
with the US troops and unofficially was
regarded as a morale booster in most cases.
Much of this material was a prized
possession and a true reminder of home.
Then came the ultimate erotic
men's magazine
Unlike then, these days many woman
back home send their own erotic style reminders in
various forms.
The
idea to put these images in book form eventuated and in
1953 Hugh Hefner created a worldwide brand with Playboy
that encompassed erotic photography with items of
interest. Men’s magazines from this time forward came
out of the closet and into everyday homes in the
millions. Photography too, was respectful and profession
offering class images with that important hint of what
might be hiding. These images even today know the
pivotal point of what is stimulating to the reader. The
first picture of Marylyn Monroe proved a huge hit to
53,000 plus buyers of the first edition. Interesting
piece of trivia was that pubic hair was not seen until
1956 a landmark event that kept many on the edge of
their corporate seats.
In the real world men viewed this
style erotic photography in an almost surreal
environment considering that the images did not
represent real woman only fantasy.
From this time on many famous and not so famous men’s
magazines came and went
